Many songs are mele pana or songs of place from areas around Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, Molokaʻi, Ōʻahu, and Kauaʻi. Other songs are mele hoʻoipoipo or love songs that use kaona or poetic references to love with the beauty and the forces of nature in the islands.Many of the songs use moving 6th intervals and rhythms from the paniolo and kī hoʻalu (slack key) traditions.
