"Bubishi" is a handwritten book that was originally transmitted from China to Okinawa. It is probably based on a more detailed work written during the Ming Dynasty by a war expert named Mao Yuan Yi around 1621. A central component of the "Bubishi" are the 48 drawings, which were intended to depict typical self-defense situations from this period. There are several handwritten copies with slightly different illustrations, presumably due to individual interpretations by Okinawan masters who contributed their own views from that time. The interpretation of the book is very difficult because it was written in ancient Chinese script and the drawings only represent a snapshot of a dynamic fighting situation. Nevertheless, an experienced martial arts expert can easily recognize the subtleties of the illustrations. Much of it not only has historical value, but is also of interest from today's perspective.
